Bubble tea calories and how to order a lighter cup
By the Nibbs teamUpdated 6 min read

Quick answer
A large full-sugar pearl milk tea has about 650 kcal (1 large cup (700 ml), full sugar, with pearls), more than a plate of nasi lemak at 500 kcal. You can cut a lot of that with three choices: a smaller cup, a lower sugar level and fewer toppings.
How many calories are in bubble tea?
Bubble tea varies more than almost any other drink. The cup size, the sugar level, the milk and the toppings all change the total. On our bubble tea page, most large cups fall in a range of 430-930 kcal.
Here is how a large pearl milk tea compares with other milk teas and with a meal.
| Dish | Calories | Protein | Carbs | Fat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 650 kcal | 3 g | 110 g | 21 g | |
| 250 kcal | 5 g | 42 g | 7 g | |
| 230 kcal | 6 g | 37 g | 6 g | |
| 130 kcal | 5 g | 15 g | 6 g | |
| 130 kcal | 3 g | 20 g | 4 g | |
| 500 kcal | 15 g | 62 g | 21 g |
A lab study of drinks from one bubble tea shop in Los Angeles found the same pattern. A 16 oz milk tea with tapioca pearls had about 300 kcal and 38 g of sugar. A 32 oz cup had about 450 kcal and 57 g of sugar. Recipes and cup sizes differ between shops and countries, so treat any single number as a guide.
Where do the calories in bubble tea come from?
Tea on its own has almost no calories. The calories come from four things that go in with it.
- Sugar syrup. Full sugar is the biggest single source. A large full-sugar cup has about 110 g of carbohydrate, most of it from sugar and pearls.
- Tapioca pearls. Pearls are starch, and shops often soak them in syrup. In the lab study, a 60 g serving of pearls had 78 kcal and about 6.5 g of sugar.
- Milk or creamer. This adds fat. A large cup has about 21 g of fat but only 3 g of protein.
- Extra toppings. Pudding, jelly, cheese foam and cream all add more. In the lab study, an 80 g serving of egg pudding had 54 kcal and about 18 g of sugar.
The low protein matters if you are trying to lose weight. A large bubble tea has the calories of a meal, but it will not keep you full like one.
How much does a lower sugar level save?
Most shops let you choose a sugar level, such as full, half, less or no sugar. A lower level cuts the syrup, so it cuts calories. Our bubble tea page shows how each sugar level and a medium cup change the total for a large pearl milk tea.
A no-sugar cup is not zero. The pearls and the milk or creamer still give most of its calories. If you want a much lighter drink, a lower sugar level works best together with a smaller cup and fewer toppings.
Sugar adds up quickly in a big cup. The World Health Organization advises adults to keep free sugars below 10% of daily energy, and ideally below 5%, which is about 25 g or 6 teaspoons a day. The 16 oz cup in the lab study had 38 g of sugar, more than that ideal limit in one drink.
Which toppings should you choose?
Pick one topping, not three. Every extra scoop adds starch, sugar or fat, and it adds up fast in a large cup.
- Pearls add 78 kcal per 60 g serving in the lab study. They are filling, but they are mostly starch.
- Egg pudding had fewer calories than the pearls in the study, but more sugar per serving.
- Cream, cheese foam and ice cream add fat on top of the sugar. Treat them as dessert.
- No topping is the lightest choice of all.
In Singapore, HealthHub says menus must show the sugar content of toppings such as pearls, jellies, ice cream and whipped cream. It also notes that a low-sugar bubble tea can still be grade C or D, because the milk and toppings add sugar and saturated fat.
How do you order a lighter bubble tea?
- Choose a medium or small cup instead of a large one.
- Drop the sugar level by one or two steps. If you usually order full sugar, try half sugar for a week.
- Keep one topping, or none.
- Skip cream, cheese foam and ice cream toppings.
- Treat bubble tea as a snack or a dessert, not a drink to have with a meal.
If you want a milky drink with fewer calories, a kopitiam drink is often lighter than a large bubble tea.

Our kopitiam drinks guide explains the order words that cut sugar in kopi and teh.
Can you drink bubble tea and still lose weight?
Yes. Weight loss depends on your total calories over time, not on one drink. A bubble tea fits into most days if you plan for it and choose a lighter cup.
The problem is the habit, not the cup. One large full-sugar cup a day is 650 kcal every day, on top of your meals. A smaller cup with less sugar, two or three times a week, is much easier to fit in.
For comparison, the Ministry of Health Malaysia calorie list puts a 250 ml glass of grass jelly drink (air cincau) at about 110 kcal. A small sweet drink can still feel like a treat.
How do you log bubble tea in Nibbs?
A photo shows the cup and the pearls, but not the sugar level. So type the details, for example "large pearl milk tea, half sugar" or "medium brown sugar milk tea, no topping". Check the portion and edit anything that looks wrong before you save.
Nibbs tracks sugar as well as calories, so you can see how much one cup adds to your day. If you order the same drink every week, save it as a saved food and log it again with one tap.
Frequently asked questions
How many calories are in a bubble tea with pearls?
A large full-sugar pearl milk tea has about 650 kcal (1 large cup (700 ml), full sugar, with pearls). Most large cups fall in a range of 430-930 kcal, depending on the shop, the cup size and the sugar level.
How many calories do tapioca pearls add?
In a published lab study of drinks from one bubble tea shop, a 60 g serving of tapioca pearls had 78 kcal and about 6.5 g of sugar. Shops that soak pearls in more syrup will be higher.
Is no-sugar bubble tea calorie free?
No. A no-sugar cup has no added syrup, but the pearls, the milk or creamer and any other toppings still have calories. Choose a smaller cup and fewer toppings to cut more.
Is bubble tea bad for weight loss?
Not on its own. A large full-sugar cup has about 650 kcal but little protein, so it fills you less than a meal with the same calories. Order a smaller cup with less sugar, and count it in your day.
