Calories burned in badminton, futsal and other popular sports in Malaysia
By the Nibbs teamUpdated 5 min read
Quick answer
An hour of social badminton burns about 315 kcal for a 70 kg person, and an hour of futsal about 476 kcal, counting only the calories above what your body burns at rest. Football burns about 420 kcal an hour and sepak takraw about 245 kcal. Heavier players and harder games burn more.
How many calories do popular sports burn?
The table shows one hour of play for two body weights. Each sport links to its own page, with easy and hard effort, 30-minute values and more body weights.
| Activity | MET | 60 kg | 75 kg |
|---|---|---|---|
| Badminton | 5.5 | 270 kcal | 338 kcal |
| Futsal | 7.8 | 408 kcal | 510 kcal |
| Football | 7 | 360 kcal | 450 kcal |
| Sepak takraw | 4.5 | 210 kcal | 263 kcal |
| Basketball | 7.5 | 390 kcal | 488 kcal |
| Netball | 7 | 360 kcal | 450 kcal |
| Volleyball | 4 | 180 kcal | 225 kcal |
| Pickleball | 4.5 | 210 kcal | 263 kcal |
| Table tennis | 4 | 180 kcal | 225 kcal |
| Tennis | 6.8 | 348 kcal | 435 kcal |
| Squash | 7.3 | 378 kcal | 473 kcal |
| Running | 9.3 | 498 kcal | 623 kcal |
| Cycling | 6.8 | 348 kcal | 435 kcal |
| Swimming | 8 | 420 kcal | 525 kcal |
Racket sports with long breaks between rallies, such as table tennis and doubles, burn less per hour than sports where you run most of the time, such as futsal and squash.
How are calories burned calculated?
Most estimates use METs from the Compendium of Physical Activities. A MET is the ratio of your working metabolic rate to your resting metabolic rate. One MET is defined as 1 kcal per kg of body weight per hour, roughly the energy cost of sitting quietly.
So an activity of 5.5 METs uses about 5.5 times the energy of sitting still. To turn METs into calories, multiply the MET value by your body weight in kg and by the hours you play.
Our calories burned pages and the Nibbs app take one more step. They subtract 1 MET, because your body burns that much even when you rest, and your daily calorie needs already count it. The result is the extra calories the sport adds:
| Step | Badminton, 70 kg, 1 hour |
|---|---|
| MET for social badminton | 5.5 |
| Take away 1 MET for resting | 5.5 minus 1 |
| Multiply by 70 kg and 1 hour | 315 kcal |
Why does effort change the number so much?
The Compendium lists separate rows for casual and competitive play. The gap is large, so pick the one that matches how you play.
| Compendium row | MET |
|---|---|
| Badminton, social singles and doubles, general (15030) | 5.5 |
| Badminton, competitive, match play (15025) | 9.0 |
| Soccer, casual, general (15610) | 7.0 |
| Soccer, competitive (15605) | 9.5 |
| Futsal (15195) | 7.8 |
| Volleyball, non-competitive, 6 to 9 member team (15720) | 3.0 |
| Volleyball, competitive, in gymnasium (15711) | 6.0 |
A friendly doubles game after work is closer to the social row. A league match where you chase every shuttle is closer to the match play row, at 9.0 METs instead of 5.5.
The Compendium has no row for sepak takraw or pickleball. The Nibbs app estimates them from the closest sports in the Compendium, volleyball for sepak takraw and tennis for pickleball.
What does an hour of sport mean in food?
It helps to see the numbers next to the food you eat after the game. These are for a 70 kg person playing for one hour.
| One hour of | Burns about | Compare with |
|---|---|---|
| Badminton | 315 kcal | 1 plain roti canai: 300 kcal |
| Football | 420 kcal | 1 plate of wantan mee: 420 kcal |
| Futsal | 476 kcal | 1 plate of nasi lemak: 500 kcal |
| Running at 10 km/h | 581 kcal | 1 plate of mee goreng mamak: 580 kcal |
The drink after the game counts too. A Milo ais adds 230 kcal and a teh tarik adds 130 kcal, against the 476 kcal you burned in an hour of futsal.
None of this means you should earn your food. Sport is good for you whatever you eat. The point is to keep your estimates honest, so your weekly totals make sense.
Should you eat back the calories you burn?
It depends on how your calorie target was set. A target based on TDEE already includes an activity level. If you chose your activity level from how often you exercise, your usual games are already in the target. Adding every session on top counts them twice.
If you play more than usual, for example a weekend tournament, eating some of it back is reasonable. Our guide to TDEE explains how activity levels work, and Nibbs works out a target for you when you set up your plan.
Remember that MET values are averages for adults aged 19 to 59. Your own burn depends on your fitness, your skill and how hard you play.
How do you log sports in Nibbs?
Nibbs has a library of more than 1,200 exercises with calorie estimates, including badminton, futsal, football and sepak takraw. Pick the sport, enter how long you played and choose the effort. Nibbs shows the estimated calories, and you can edit them before you save.
On iPhone, Nibbs can sync with Apple Health. Your calorie and macro targets come from your TDEE, and your food log sits next to your exercise, so you see the whole day in one place.
Frequently asked questions
How many calories does badminton burn in an hour?
About 315 kcal for a 70 kg person playing social badminton, and about 270 kcal for a 60 kg person. These are net calories above resting. Competitive match play burns much more.
How many calories does futsal burn?
About 476 kcal per hour for a 70 kg person at moderate effort, and about 238 kcal in 30 minutes. Futsal has its own Compendium row at 7.8 METs.
Is futsal or badminton better for weight loss?
Per hour, futsal burns more than social badminton: about 476 kcal against 315 kcal for a 70 kg person. The best sport for weight loss is the one you enjoy and play every week. Food still matters more than exercise for most people.
How many calories does sepak takraw burn?
About 245 kcal per hour for a 70 kg person at moderate effort. The Compendium has no sepak takraw row, so the estimate uses volleyball rows as the closest match.
Why is my smartwatch number higher?
If a device shows total calories, it includes the calories you would burn at rest anyway. Our pages and the Nibbs app show net calories, the extra calories the activity adds. Devices also estimate effort in different ways.
